Why I Love Neocities (despite fake nostalgia and gay shit)
Neocities is actually awesome
Here's the coolest website I saw while recording shit with OBS: https://onge.org/
this is another cool one: https://neocities.corru.observer/

@nushimura pikidiary seems pretty cool, I like the featureset I saw. I'd never join though, mostly cause microblogging as a concept is aids

@shingo Almost every upper middle class house had tuscan design during the housing bubble. Cream color tiles, those ceiling light fixtures that look like nipples and always collected dead bugs, hardwood arches, maybe a marble pillar here and there (too gauche for me).

@kawwa making a website is pretty easy, and neocities has some decent tutorials. for a comic, it's pretty much just a matter of sticking images on it and some links

I have been using Neocities for the past couple of years and there's some pages I like and some I don't. I often build my website more like a Retro RPG styled menu with pages and stuff because I just did it because I think it looks cool, I'm not someone who just larps on about the late 90's internet geocities styled pages or even worse Roleplays like they're a Geocities user in 1999. I think one that gets my eyes rolling is stuff where it emulates a Windows 95 desktop or whatever. I don't go out of my way shitting on them directly, But when I see a cool page I like I sometimes (Back on my old site) add a link and a description.
I've kinda been returning back to Neocities and even made my brand new page that I've been advertising with the URL being similar to my Bluesky account's handle (Which is what it was used for)

1:26 That comic implies that constantly getting swept up in the current mainstream instead of holding onto the things you actually like is better. It contradicts your point.

@eggrod i add that i joined vidlii because i want alternatives to youtube that arent fuicking ok.ru and stuff

@shingo (fuck vidlii for glitching and not posting my reply the first time!!!) i don't use neocities anymore but it was fun when i did. the community helps each other out and there's a lot of tools. but my only hope is that the rise of vibe coding (ai prompting to make code) doesnt cause it to be filled with ai trash that's barely coherent.

@MuyaTheMman that would be way too expensive for them to offer for free, and the security concerns would be pretty bad

Eh, I see your point about nostalgia but I don't think there's a problem as long as it doesn't take precidence over creating new things. If someone wants to emulate the mannerisms or behaviors of better times, so long as they have actual content on their website I think that's a good thing largely.
I understand of course the sort of sites you're complaining about, the pages with nothing but about mes, links back to social media, DNI lists and other n00b crap. But a lot of them are just zoomers that don't know anything except social media so there's bound to be growing pains. Either they adapt and get into it beyond a superficial level or they just leave their barren pages in favor of doomscrolling Twitter, which means they won't appear in the update feed.

@ZOMG it's probably fine, but I'm gonna call out the stupid shit nevertheless. My video is optimistic and echoes what you said though

When I talk about bad nostalgia, I mean, for example, just recreating websites from the past or just making a personal site that ultimately only serves to redirect to your social media accounts like Xitter, Instagram, or Bluesky (lol).
That's why I like sites like pikidiary for example, because they simply take inspiration from old website designs/styles and create a new one.
For vidlii, it's different, because it's a recreation of the old YouTube, and personally, I find it's the only one that's usable.
For Neocities, the service is good, but it's the users who misuse it. So that's a problem.
And they should also stop bloating their sites with useless JavaScrapt.
Seriously, I just want to slit my throat when I try to lurk on their fucking sites with my old laptop.
Anyway, good video!
